Westport Matters: Antique Shingle Mill

     In this year 2000 episode, Mayflower descendent Billy White demonstrates how Massachusetts homesteaders made their own wood shingles in the early 1900's. A must see for anyone interested in antique farm equipment, Billy White's collection includes a 1924 Chase shingle mill, made by the Chase Turbine Company of Orange, Mass., and an antique rotary plane, made by the Carver Cotton Gin Company of Carver, Mass.     Not just a hobby, Billy covered his own house with pine shingles he made over 25 years ago. In this documentary, he shows us how to select the stock, fell a tree, cut logs to length, mill logs into shingles, and finish (or square up) the product. At the end of movie we find out how the homemade shingles have been holding up.
